EXHIBITIONS is a postgraduate diploma that offers specialisation in the design and creation of new exhibition formats and contents. From a temporary perspective, it reviews, takes an in-depth look and renews the different elements inherent to it, such as curating exhibitions, the creation of temporary experiences, the establishment of spaces for interaction and the configuration of new audiences.
Thinking, creating and innovating in the area of exhibitions is becoming increasingly more a task of managing complexities and transdisciplinary confluence. Curation based on the selection, organisation and thematisation of contents; design and art as creative practices that generate and transform spaces; interaction, mediation and communication to activate other audiences; these are all elements that need to be interrelated to seek innovative approaches in the configuration, presentation and activation of cultural proposals. We are in the midst of significant changes in the organisation of work processes in such a way that relationship networks and collaborative action practices are transforming the production of cultural meaning. From this perspective, the programme sees itself as an action platform based on research, dialogue, experimentation and critical thought for it to have a practical impact on the new trends in exhibition design and temporary spaces, interactive experimentation, and the hybrid configurations that permit the more traditional exhibition space to be transcended. It is a platform that is fed by the learning generated on the basis of the transversal convergence between curating professionals, art, design and architecture, and other areas of the humanities or sciences, which become inspirational while generating contents and different ways of communicating them.
EXHIBITIONS features the collaboration of the Museu del Disseny de Barcelona, the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC) and the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB). All these institutions work in a different way on exhibition programming and are taking part in the postgraduate course by contributing to the proposal of a place for research and experimentation around the creation of temporary spaces, exhibition experiences, the configuration of contents and the establishment of new audiences.
EXHIBITIONS, the postgraduate diploma in Curatorship, Design and Spaces rolls out a programme divided into four sections: Research Seminars, Case Studies, Talks and Final Project.
Blended learning mode.

It is also an option for anyone with a sensitivity and interest who want to complement their knowledge in the conception of spaces, content creation and experience and exhibition design.
The postgraduate course is divided into four sections: Research Seminars, Case Studies, Talks and Project.
Both in the Case Studies and in the Talks, the postgraduate diploma tackles the contents from a series of central themes that are determined in collaboration with, and with the participation of, a number of collaborating institutions. The aim is to be able to relate the postgraduate diploma to lines of work that are active.
Module 1. Research seminars – (9 ECTS)
The Research Seminars module investigates and constructs the foundations for conceiving and organising exhibitions. Students work on the conceptualisation and development of the exhibition project, research methodologies and the creation of narrative structures; they analyse the aspects related to the exhibition space and its interactive dynamic with the public, as well as other formats for the organisation of parallel activities and educational programmes.
It is comprised of the following sections:
- Foundations of curating and narrative practice
- The exhibition space as an element of interaction
- Elements for mediation
Module 2. Case studies – (9 ECTS)
The Case Studies module consists of involving the student in specific cases, in which situations are given that have to be solved within the framework of the complexity of elements that are involved. The module is done with the collaboration of institutions in Barcelona that schedule exhibitions and cultural activities from different starting points. Specifically for this edition, we have the collaboration of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, Museu del Disseny de Barcelona and CCCB.
Through a series of case studies linked to these collaborating institutions, students are able to analyse in depth the various fields and agents that take part in them. The starting point of the sessions are exhibitions that have already been done or that are currently under way, and features the participation of roles such as the curator, the artists (understood as creators-producers, etc.), the designer, the mediator, and people connected with the institutional context.
Based on the case studies, the participants have to obtain experience and practice in curating, critical reflection and the design of spaces. The module includes guided tours, lectures, round tables and interviews outside the classroom.
It is organised as follows:
- Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya case study. Historical or themed discourse exhibitions with original work.
- Museu del Disseny de Barcelona case study.
- CCCB case study.
Module 3. Talks – (6 ECTS)
The Talks module covers the different professions connected with the practice of exhibition curating and design from the inside. It features the participation of curators, conservators, archivists, designers, arts managers, mediators and other specialists in areas connected with the profession, such as: artistic ideation and creation, research, design of spaces, communication and education, and management and production.
The module is structured on the basis of dialogue and debate sessions with guest specialists, and subsequent workshop sessions in which students work on the concepts covered with the guests. The participants in each edition vary according to the lines of work proposed. These lines of work are established on the basis of the institutional collaborations.
- Session 1: Artistic ideation and creation. The topic of debate is proposed in relation to the origin of an exhibition project, highlighting the different possibilities.
- Session 2: Research and visualisation. The topic of debate is proposed in relation to research, references and conceptual strategies that precede, accompany and give form to every exhibition project.
- Session 3: Management and coordination. The topic of debate is proposed in relation to the management and coordination tasks that are generated during the exhibition project process.
- Session 4: Space. The topic of debate is proposed in relation to the intervention in the exhibition space from all perspectives, both technical and conceptual.
- Session 5: Communication and education. The topic of debate is proposed in relation to the dissemination and transfer of the exhibition project and the peripheral activities that may be derived from it.
- Session 6: Production. The topic of debate is proposed in relation to the staging of the exhibition.
The workshop sessions after the talks are connected with the same themes and are done with group dynamics.
Module 4. Project – 6 ECTS Credits
The module that consists of the production of a curating project, exhibition design or mediation project that responds to a motivation and to the student’s independent work. The aim is to produce a final postgraduate project that the student will have to carry out from the second part of the academic year with the tutored mentoring of one of the teachers taking part. The presentation of this project will be made public on completion of the postgraduate course.
