Specialisation course in children’s and youth illustration

Specialisation course in children’s and youth illustration

The Eina Specialisation Course in children’s and youth Illustration offers a programme designed to develop and adapt the personal style of students to the particular features of work aimed at children and youth. In addition, it incorporates optimal work processes that contribute to students becoming professional illustrators in this sector.

Our programme is structured around three fundamental objectives:

→ Providing students with their own voice.
→ Encouraging research across its different creative registers.
→ Accompanying students in the preparation of abundant and quality materials that allows them to create or nurture a solid professional portfolio.

During the course, students will develop projects in various fields such as pre-reading publications and illustrations for magazines, textbooks, and children's albums. Narrative is also worked on through the creation of children's and youth literature projects, as well as an illustrated album. Each of these projects is addressed by analysing and simulating the real models and requirements of the current professional market.

Programme

Drawing applied to illustration
This workshop will focus on the analysis of both the formal and content characteristics of illustrations. This analysis will be carried out through public comments on the portfolio through which students have gained admittance to the course, linking style, technique, composition, stroke, colour, and so on with the narrative objectives inherent in illustration works and works by leading illustrators in the professional world.

Magazine illustration
This course addresses magazine publications aimed at children and young people. The characteristics of the different specific types are described, such as magazines for comics, games, hobbies, and short stories. In the hands-on part, students will work on projects adapted to this medium.

Publications for pre-readers
This subject focuses on understanding the world of children who have not yet fully grasped reading and writing skills. In the theoretical part, students will study the conceptual elements that support child development. In the hands-on part, students will work on a project adapted to these needs.

Textbooks
This subject addresses the most crucial factors for textbooks such as concision, clarity, and comprehension speed. The necessary resources will be analysed to achieve a balance between the pedagogical function and an attractive, original, and, in many cases, playful visual presentation with the aim of facilitating academic learning.

Narrative illustration
In its broadest dimension, this subject researches the relationship between literary texts and visual narration through illustrated books in a paperback format within the publishing collections aimed at children and young people. The technical, narrative, and artistic characteristics of illustration for age ranges between 8 and 12 years will be studied, analysing how graphic resources can enhance the reading experience.

Idea generation
This course offers an approach to illustration for children and young people from a strictly narrative dimension, exploring the creative process through writing. Different methods will be addressed to unlock and streamline creativity, with a special emphasis on the relationship between artistic creation and emotional expression.

Album analysis
This course focuses on the narrative analysis of illustrated albums, exploring the synergies between text and images. Through the study of outstanding works in the history of children's and youth literature, key aspects of visual and literary storytelling, publishing design, and the strategies used by authors to build meaning will be addressed.
