Paloma Valdivia

She studied graphic design and is a writer, illustrator and editor of children's books (www.edicionesliebre.cl).

She studied design at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (1996-2001), Postgraduate in Creative Illustration and Visual Communication Techniques at Eina (2005-2006), Barcelona, Spain and Anthropology and Audiovisual Communication at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (2019-2020).

Teaching

For years she has trained illustrators in Chile. She has taught undergraduate classes at the Universidad Mayor, Finis Terrae, Universidad de Desarrollo and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. At the latter, she created and directs a diploma course on Illustration and autobiographical narrative, where she brings together different disciplines and trains students from a multimodal learning that mixes areas such as psychology, writing, music and documentary with illustration.

Professional experience

She currently has more than 30 titles published, with translations into 16 languages. What she is most passionate about are books, stories, images, but above all, childhood, as that place we all inhabit, as that sacred territory that must be protected above all things.

Her work has been recognised internationally, including the Grand Prix of the Bratislava Biennial of Illustration 2023 (Slovakia), the Green Island Nami Concours 2023 (Korea), the nomination for the Hans Christian Andersen Award 2024 (Denmark) and the New York Times Best Children's Book of 2022 for The Book of Questions (USA).

Her best-known works are Los de Arriba y los de abajo (Kalandraka, Spain 2009), Es Así (Fondo de Cultura Económica, Mexico 2010), Nosotros (Amanuta, Chile 2014) and El libro de las Preguntas de Pablo Neruda (Enchanted Lion Books, USA 2022). This year she was the guest of honour at the Bologna Illustrated Book Fair, where she illustrated the cover of the illustrators' yearbook 2024.

Paloma is also an editor and, together with Mónica Bombal, runs Ediciones Libre, a publishing house for early childhood, which was nominated for the BOP award as the best publishing house for children in Latin America and the Caribbean for the years 2023 and 2024.
