Trena, Laia Estruch's sound sculpture at MNAC

Laia Estruch, artist in residence at EINA for the academic year 2022-2023 and professor of the Bachelor of Design, has created 'Trena', a sound sculpture that is installed in the Oval Room of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC) from 7 July to 3 September.

This piece is made up of three braided inflatable tubes that form a circuit 35 metres long by 6.60 metres wide and 5 metres high and 2 metres in diameter, and is activated every hour on the hour with a musical piece lasting 1 minute 48 seconds, produced in collaboration with Xavi Lloses.

Trena' is a circulation system based on the morphology of the plexus, the branched network of vessels or nerves like those in the human body. It is also inspired by the architecture of automobile circuits, athletics circuits and amusement parks. It has a performative character and joins the body of the MNAC to draw a new sound route, a new way to inhabit it, walk through it and listen to it.

The project arises from the artist's need to open up new lines of research related to the movement of the body in relation to the voice and the word, forcing its behaviours and gestures. The sound research and the collaboration between the participants will allow a singular body and voice work to question our relationship with space.
