“Diseño gráfico e identidad cultural patrimonial”

Defence of the thesis "Graphic design and cultural heritage identity"

Doctoral student Camila Reveco Sepúlveda, who has completed her research in the Philosophy PhD programme at EINA, will defend her doctoral thesis entitled "Diseño gráfico e identidad cultural patrimonial. Creación de símbolos en base a la recomposición de signos indígenas chilenos de los pueblos Diaguita, Rapanui, Mapuche y Selk'nam” (Graphic design and cultural heritage identity. Creation of symbols based on the recomposition of Chilean indigenous signs of the Diaguita, Rapanui, Mapuche and Selk'nam peoples) on Wednesday 25 May at 11.30 am in the Assembly Hall of EINA Sentmenat.

The study aims to disseminate the artistic heritage of four Chilean indigenous peoples: Diaguita, Mapuche, Selk'nam, and Rapanui, which are representative of each macro geographical region of the country: north, centre, south (corresponding to continental Chile), and Polynesia.

To achieve this objective, Camila relies on the rescue of graphic elements and their updating through graphic design mechanisms. In this aspect, the basis of the research is materialised through an interdisciplinary and participatory project that articulates co-design practices, with a review of current theoretical models, and a game design proposal as a mechanism for delivering knowledge. The intention has been the creation of symbols for a contemporary audience to revalue the graphic-based heritage legacy of Chile's indigenous peoples.

The thesis was co-directed by Dr. Elena Bartomeu, from EINA, and Dr. David Casacuberta, from the Department of Aesthetics and Theory of the Arts of the Faculty of Philosophy of the UAB.
