The Sant Carles Restaurant is the result of renovation work to a bar and the execution of a restaurant in a building that forms part of the Piscines Sant Carles Squash-Gimnàs sports complex in the town of Palau-solità i Plegamans. With this proposal, my main aim was to give a forgotten space a function, and also offer the club a renewed and updated image.
There are two types of functions planned for the space: on the ground floor is the bar with its terrace, which will operate independently from the kitchen on this floor, and the first floor will house the restaurant. This will have a cold and preparation kitchen, which will have a space set aside for washing, and a hot kitchen. Both floors will be connected by a service lift. The bar and restaurant will be able to accommodate a maximum of 115 and 128 diners, respectively.
Opening up an entrance, which is currently closed, will provide direct access to the bar and restaurant, as will installing a small reception area for information and bookings. The secondary access will have a ramp for people with reduced mobility, who will be able to access the first floor by lift.
The oak covering the different parts of the building brings a utility to the two spaces and serves to join the interior with the exterior. This makes it the central motif of the intervention. There has been moderate intervention on the façade and the same system of wooden slats has been incorporated as for the interior, which hides part of the openings. In the interior courtyard, wood flooring runs around the swimming pool in the same style as on the bar terrace. Diners are arranged in groups, which favours the meeting and leisure element of the setting. One feature that differentiates the bar from the restaurant is the backs of the chairs, as those in the bar do not have any.
