Andrea Durall - La volta a l’estany

Return to the lake

In summer, each town has its own way of cooling down. Coastal towns use the beach, those in the hinterland choose a stream and we in Banyoles have a lake, a calm and enchanting sea. We have swum a little bit all over the place in the lake: at its tip, at the wooden hut, at night (naked, as night time bathing should be). We have swum at the fishing huts, where we were allowed and where we weren’t. At the Club, whether we were members and not. During the rest of the year, the water in the lake is not so inviting and we enjoy it in other ways: spending afternoons at La Draga, walking the dog, etc.

The beauty and the stories guarded by the lake gave me the idea of looking into the origins and changes and to research the fishing huts that have appeared in so many pictures and made for so many good times.

Today, most of them have fallen into disrepair, standing lifeless. The aim of my project is to awaken an interest in these buildings and their surroundings; to try and understand what is unique to these styles of architecture, focusing on how they have been abandoned under current legislation, created on the basis of a limited vision. The ultimate aim is to remodel them and give them back the life that once emanated from them.
