Four EINA doctoral programme theses defended

This October, four doctoral theses in the EINA Research in Art and Design itinerary are being defended within the framework of the PhD Programme in Art Philosophy and Theory at the UAB. These four doctoral theses are added to the three EINA doctoral theses defended since 2019, all of them receiving a mark of excellent as hoped for.

The seven researchers have participated in the doctoral seminar GEARAD (Applied Aesthetics for Artistic Research and Design Group), which meets monthly at the EINA University School of Design and Art to cover procedural and content issues related to research in Art and Design. It is worth noting that two of the aforementioned PhD students previously completed the EINA and UAB University Master's Degree in Research in Art and Design (MURAD).

Sara Gómez will defend her doctoral thesis “Relationships between choreographic events and the political stage. An artistic investigation”, advised by Jèssica Jaques and Gerard Vilar. The event will be open to the public and held at the Autonomous University of Barcelona Bellaterra campus: Television Studio No. 1, Faculty of Communication, Building I, 1st Floor, Carrer de la Vinya s/n. You can also attend online through the following Zoom link.

Sara Gómez's thesis is the result of four years of hands-on and theoretical research, the objective of which was to find an intersection between choreography and politics. She did this both through her own experience as a dancer and choreographer of contemporary dance and through dialogue with the critical thought of current philosophers such as Jacques Rancière.

EINA has actively collaborated in several of Sara Gomez's research activities, such as her presentation at the Indisciplinas conference at the Barcelona Campus of the Arts or the first sessions on political choreography at La Caldera.

Pilar Talavera will defend her thesis “Gustatory practices of confusion. Contemporary participatory performance and art”, advised by Jèssica Jaques and Gerard Vilar. Her defence can be viewed simultaneously through the Zoom link.

The performer and researcher Pilar Talavera has combined her artistic practice with the analysis of references and the proposal of concepts related to the field of gustatory aesthetics. The thesis considers the ephemeral nature of food understood as an aesthetic possibility, which is in turn performed as conflict, self-portrait, absence, and more.

This past Thursday, 22 October, Swantje Martach defended her doctoral thesis "Towards a New Materialist Ontology of Clothing", advised by Jèssica Jaques, David Casacuberta, and Ian King, in a collaboration between EINA, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the University of the Arts London, and the FAZIT-institute, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

On 30 September, Alicia de Manuel defended her doctoral thesis "Quantified Self: humanization processes and representation of the given in wearable devices", advised by David Casacuberta, in the EINA University School of Design and Art Auditorium.

The first two theses of the EINA doctoral itinerary were presented beforehand. In July 2020, at the UAB Faculty of Philosophy Lecture Hall, Xabier Ortiz de Urbina defended his thesis "The documentary comedy: A study on capturing, provoking, and creating the comic in documentaries", advised by Josep Maria Català and Jèssica Jaques. In February 2019, Clara Laguillo defended her thesis “Totum Simul. Simultaneity and other temporary experiences in the digital age”, in the Autonomous University of Barcelona Faculty of Philosophy and Literature Meeting Room.
