Cesc Benavent turns his grandfather’s archive into collective heritage

Cesc Benavent, former student of the Eina Bachelor's Degree in Design and resident of Castellar del Vallès, dedicated his Final Degree Project, Entre vida, Ramon Llinares, to recovering and highlighting the photographic legacy of his grandfather, Ramon Llinares (1923-2016). Llinares, an amateur photographer but highly regarded in the 1960s and 70s —even winning the National Prize for Artistic Photography—, left behind an extensive archive of more than 12,000 black-and-white negatives, many of them never printed. His images, oscillating between the humanism of figures such as Miserachs or Colita and a more experimental gaze close to Robert Frank, portray everyday scenes, portraits, landscapes, and key moments in Catalonia’s recent history.

As a result of this work, Benavent presented the volume Entre vida as his Final Degree Project, structured in two parts: a selection of his grandfather’s images and the biography Photographer in Transition, which contextualizes the work. Later, on the occasion of the exhibition A l’altra banda del riu at the Centre Excursionista de Terrassa, a specific catalogue was also published featuring a selection of previously unseen photographs. The project, which involved digitising and organising more than 1,500 photographs, transforms a family archive into a collective heritage that helps preserve the country’s visual memory.
