Ambush #1: Sergi Aguilar

The first manifestation on the Ambushes programme at EINA Bosc is carried out by Sergi Aguilar (Barcelona, 1946), visual artist and historic professor at EINA from recent decades. His sculptural, graphic and photographic practice is marked by reflection on space, mass, emptiness and tensions in the structure, following the trail left by great figures such as Tony Smith or Jorge Oteiza, and geographical thinking and critical understanding of materials play an equally fundamental role in his practice. Continuing some of his works in steel and, in particular, the series of wedges and ramps that began in the eighties, the artist carries out a site-specific intervention at EINA Bosc, in collaboration with students of the EINA’s Master in Space Design. Following a workshop taking place at the end of April, the project is presented to the public during two open days, on 8 and 15 May of 2021, coinciding with the Barcelona Architecture Week.

In the text that accompanied his retrospective, presented at MACBA in 2015, Aguilar pointed out: “The permanent transit of a body, of bodies, whether animated or not, informs us that practically everything is in continuous change. Space and matter with their “thickness” are constantly offering live information, in real time, but it seems like we move and communicate better in what is not real, in simulation. Are we afraid of being exposed to the four winds?” This reflection takes specific connotations in times of digitalization and distancing, as well as in the framework of a building under construction such as EINA Bosc: a space in progress and exposed, in its current construction phase, “to the four winds”.
