In this course, you will learn how to conceptualise, design and build a full-scale piece using materials commonly found in architecture and construction. You will work through the entire process, from the initial idea and the development of your own creative approach to the production of the object and its final presentation in a group exhibition.

Programme overview

The Collectible Design Course will allow you to explore an area of contemporary design where the traditional boundaries between art, architecture and object design become blurred.

You will discover leading local and contemporary practitioners in the sector and gain the foundations needed to develop your own proposal. Through self-production, you will experiment with the relationship between materiality, use and space to create new hybrid pieces that go beyond a purely decorative function.

Who is it for?

The course is aimed at students, designers and creative practitioners who wish to enter the world of Collectible Design and explore new approaches to creation and self-production.

It is particularly suited to those who want to move beyond traditional design, experiment with new processes and materials, and take on the challenge of designing and building their first collectible piece using materials commonly found in architecture and construction.

What will you learn?

You will learn how to develop a Collectible Design piece, from conceptualisation through to full-scale production.

Throughout the course, you will explore different materials, processes and crafts that you can apply to your own creations. You will also examine the relationship between objects and space, the visual tensions that arise between them, and their influence on contemporary ways of inhabiting spaces.

You will also gain first-hand insights into leading galleries, companies, studios and professionals to understand how the sector operates and the professional opportunities offered by self-production.

Methodology

The course takes a predominantly practical approach, with guidance from professionals currently working in the sector.

You will combine theoretical sessions with practical work in Eina's workshops, where you will progressively develop your own piece. The programme will be complemented by visits to companies, workshops and creative spaces, as well as talks and sessions with guest professionals.

Project development will require approximately 3 hours of independent work per week, in addition to scheduled teaching hours.

The course will be taught in Catalan, Spanish and English, depending on the needs of the group.

Collaborations

Throughout the course, you will engage with professionals, companies, galleries and spaces connected to contemporary design and Collectible Design.

The programme features contributions from Side Gallery, BD Barcelona, Parachilna and Apartamento Magazine, and includes visits to industrial and creative spaces such as TMDC and Plataforma de Construcció.

These connections will allow you to discover different approaches to producing, exhibiting and bringing design pieces to market, while broadening your understanding of the professional opportunities available within the sector.
