Learn to manipulate light as a tool for artistic and spatial creation in this intensive course, Taming Light, with Antoni Arola. Through theoretical and practical sessions, you will experiment with the intensity, colour, direction and interaction of light with materials to create luminous objects and scenes that transform the perception of space.
→ From 11 February to 22 April 2027
→ On-site
→ 32 hours, 10 sessions
→ Thursdays, from 4 pm to 8 pm
→ Catalan and Spanish
→ Toni Arola Studio and Eina
→ €975
→ Applications open
To enrol, you will need a university identification number (NIU) and a password. If you are not a student at Eina, you must complete a registration form.
Two scholarships covering 100% of the course tuition fees are available through the Fundación Banco Sabadell Talent Scholarships. For more information, please contact postgraus@eina.cat.
Presentation of the course Taming Light with Antoni Arola
To tame means to bring something wild closer to the human environment, making it habitable, understandable and familiar. Building on this idea, the course invites you to explore light as a living, transformative medium.
Over nine sessions, you will combine conceptual foundations, creative references and practical experimentation to deepen your understanding of the properties of light and discover new ways of using it in artistic and spatial creation.
Through play and experimentation, you will develop lighting proposals that blur the boundaries of reality and transform the way spaces are perceived.
Study plan
The course is structured around nine sessions combining theory, experimentation and the development of lighting proposals. You will work with different light sources, materials and technologies to explore their properties and creative applications.
Winter schedule
Session 1. Masterclass with Antoni Arola
You will discover Antoni Arola's influences, interests and creative universe, and gain insight into his approach to working with light.
Session 2. What is light? Physical properties and optical phenomena
You will explore the behaviour of light, its physical properties, optical phenomena and the relationship between light and colour.
Session 3. Creating a lighting object using a candle
You will experiment with a four-hour candle to create a lighting object capable of illuminating the studio during the session.
Session 4. Light from different disciplinary perspectives
You will take part in a discussion with professionals from different fields, including design, architecture, philosophy, physics and music, to explore diverse perspectives on light.
You will also visit the space at Eina Bosc where the final installation will take place and begin exploring possibilities for interventions using light.
Session 5. Experimenting with spotlights, lasers, motors and mirrors
You will explore the creative possibilities of different lighting devices and elements, including spotlights, lasers, motors and mirrors.
Session 6. Light control and LED programming
In collaboration with ProtoPixel, you will be introduced to LED programming and the use of projection to explore the possibilities of lighting control.
Summer timetable
Session 7. Observing natural light in Collserola
With the planned participation of a meteorologist from the Observatori Fabra, you will take part in an excursion to Collserola to observe and document the sunrise. Drawing on this experience, you will develop a colour palette.
Session 8. Transforming space with natural light
You will experiment with windows, colour filters and smoke to discover how natural light can alter the perception and atmosphere of a space.
Session 9. Preparing the final light installation project
You will develop your proposal for a final light installation at Eina Bosc, applying the knowledge and light experimentation techniques acquired throughout the course.
Session 10. Final project presentations
You will present the results of your experiments with light in a final session attended by special guests, followed by a celebration at Eina.
