This project refurbishes a public space that has been operating for 26 years in Barcelona's Born district and which works today as a leisure centre for people over the age of 65. The centre has three floors, many openings to the outside and a double façade, but it has access problems, it is not very functional and it closes in on itself. The aim is to make it more permeable and flexible to achieve greater internal and external communication, and a better use of the space, and to create a new language and a new dynamic for this type of centre.
With the aim of removing barriers and achieving greater flow, the proposal is to level the ground floor with the outside and the first floor with mezzanine. With a view to recovering the natural light and visual communication, the external and internal carpentry is lightened. To make the most of the space and meet the needs and the functions of the rooms, furniture based on MDF and chipboard has been developed for all the floors. There is a concern with achieving a comfortable, cosy, informal and active atmosphere. Finally, the floors communicate virtually with each other through an interactive multimedia file through wifi and tablets that keep the centre culturally active and up to date.
