BCN360

The summit of the Turó de la Rovira is the highest point on the Barcelona plain. It is both a marginalised and a privileged space, currently not developed and in a wild state. Owing to its characteristics, the space was used in the twentieth century in extreme and dramatic situations – for example, the anti-air defence of Barcelona during the civil war and the phenomenon of shanty towns during the post-war period – of which some evidence still remains.

Under the title of BCN360, the aim of the project is to contemplate the space and the time of the summit of the Turó de la Rovira. It is an itinerary that runs through the ruins and that conditions two spaces: one as interpretation centre and the other as consultation and services area. This project is based on the fact of taking into consideration the historical background of the use of the area to provide a response based on the compositional desire that integrates the new intervention into the remains of the previous interventions.

The formal language chosen is based on the search for the common denominator of these historic burdens: incomplete shelter, refuge with scant resources, and the fragment, collage and superimposition of layers. The lighting accentuates these desires, marking the cuts and the fragmentations and creating an intimate atmosphere. The project does not attempt to overcome the place or make it a bourgeois intervention to enjoy simply the views, but respectfully runs through and evokes its historic burdens.
