META MATERIAL I DADES

META MATERIAL I DADES

META MATERIAL I DADES is a seminar taking the ontology of interfaces, materials and languages as a starting point to collectively analyze their interactions and potential. We will say that such a potential is the very form of contemporaneity and the element in which our current practices move and activate – from sculpture to sound, from architecture to the performative body, from geology to textile, from text to speculative design. All of them being transversally haunted by the question of post-materiality, or, how to deal with a world in which materials are also programmable data, objects pair and replicate, data flows become gestures and corporeal mutations, physical relationships are virtually mediated and viceversa. Constructive processes, in sum, are hybrids and it is key for us to think of their stratifications as an element for fluid investigations.

META MATERIAL I DADES is a space to think about what Gottfried Semper would call the tectonic arts in his canonical work Der Stil in den technischen und tektonischen Künsten, oder, Praktische Aesthetik (1863) and review, among many other historical references, the work of architects such as Kenneth Frampton and Bernard Tschumi, and the oeuvre of artists such as Anni Albers, Iannis Xenakis, Robert Smithson or Aurèlia Muñoz. It will also allow us to approach current propositions and practices in art, design, speculative theory, and technology. Thus, META MATERIAL I DADES will also be the playground-battlefield for the analysis of key concepts of our time, from digital ontologies to the political underpinnings of virtuality and presence.

The second edition of META MATERIAL I DADES includes the interventions of artists Julia Varela, Sara Ramo, Mariona Cañadas and Pedro Murúa, curator Sílvia Ventosa Muñoz, and anthropologist Ana Ramo. In this way, the seminar leads to reflections at the intersection of artistic, architectonic and ethnographic thought, and discourses that emerge from art history and philosophy. The sessions develop through ideas around the flux of objects and materials in contexts of destruction, production, imagination and speculation, the sociocultural relationships embodied in matter, and the processes of enveloping and knotting, melting and reconstruction and collective learning.

Speakers of the 2021-22 edition:
10 MayJulia Varela, artist, Madrid
17 May: Sílvia Ventosa Muñoz, anthropologist and textile curator, Barcelona; Pedro Murúa and Mariona Cañadas, artists, Barcelona
24 May: Ana Ramo and Sara Ramo, ethnographer and artist, Madrid/Sao Paulo

In its third edition, META MATERIAL I DADES takes place as both a conceptual and material activation of Aurèlia Muñoz. Aerial atelier, extending a weekly guided immersion in the exhibition. The activity also consists of the collective creation of a large-scale knotted sculpture that occupies the exhibition space and evolves within it for more than a month. This macramé-totem acts as a symbolic and performative vehicle for the different audiences of the exhibition to get involved in the gradual, artisanal and self-organized crafting of an emblematic piece of the project, materialising the ritual and meditative dimension of the aerial atelier.

Speakers of the 2022-23 edition:
25 April: Manuel Cirauqui, Mireia Molina Costa and Alex Viladrich, team of eina idea, Barcelona
3 May: Sílvia Ventosa Muñoz, textile curator and anthropologist, Barcelona
9 May: Ana Ramo, ethnographer, Madrid/Sao Paulo
