Sophya Acosta

PhD candidate in Arts and Techno-Aesthetics at the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero (Buenos Aires). Holds a Bachelor’s degree in Scenic Lighting Design (2013–2021) and a Technical degree in Lighting Design (2013–2015) from the Universidad Nacional de las Artes, Buenos Aires. Completed an academic exchange at the Institut del Teatre de Barcelona (2017), specializing in Scenography, and was selected as a Youth Ambassador by the United States Department of State (2012).

Teaching / Research

She is a professor of Light Art at Universidad Ramon Llull – La Salle since 2024 and of Creation Laboratories at EINA – Centre Universitari de Disseny i Art de Barcelona since 2025. Together with Luciana Suppicich, she directs LIGHT.LAB (since 2020), a research and training space in light art that has gathered over 500 professionals from 20 countries.

She has given lectures and masterclasses at universities and cultural centers across Europe and Latin America, including Small Venues, Gigantic Ideas at Showlight (Dijon, 2025), Ondas y partículas at Disruptia (Madrid, 2025), and Scenic Lighting Design at IADE – Universidad Europea (Madrid, 2025).

Professional activity

Since 2019, she has directed Sophya Acosta Lighting Design Studio, based in Barcelona and Buenos Aires, specializing in scenic lighting, luminous installations, and architectural and cultural projects. Her career includes collaborations with international companies such as Cirque du Soleil and Olympic Broadcasting Services (Paris 2024 Olympic Games).

She has worked as a lighting and video technician on large-scale productions (MSC Meraviglia, MSC Grandiosa) and as technical director at Teatre Gaudí de Barcelona (2023). In the artistic field, she has created light installations for La Noche de los Museos (Buenos Aires) and La Nit dels Museus (Barcelona), as well as award-winning works such as Siete Puertas (Museo Urbano Poggi, 2018).

Awards

She received the international 40 under 40 award (2022), the AJÁ! Prize (2018), and was a finalist in the 4th International Artificial Lighting Photography Competition (UPC – iCandela, 2018). She was an invited juror for the [d]arc awards (2023) and has been a permanent juror of the LIT Lighting Design Awards since 2022. She is a member of IALD, APDI, ADEA, AAI, and ASAEDE, and is part of the international network Women in Lighting.
