Rubbish Project by Juan Avila and Andrea Bilbao

Juan Avila, student of the postgraduate in Photography and Editorial Design and Andrea Bilbao, student of the second year course of the Degree in Design, are the authors of Rubbish Vademecum, vademecum edition, complement to the Rubbish project, where they stored and photographed discarded containers by themselves, their friends, and others, that had been found in the street, to finally encode each type of container per waste, giving it a color, and then creating still-lifes with such waste. In total they had 30 large-format photographs for the project, presented in 2012.

In parallel, they documented in the way of typologies, each of the containers that passed through his hands, about 250. For such documentation, each piece was isolated from its photographing context, set-out on gray background, and then proceeded to measure them, check their weight, capacity , type of waste and how each one behaves once discarded (how long it takes to biodegrade if it is recyclable, etc). Such documentation was used by the publisher, to make an edition of 60 photographs of the 60 most unique and representative container, within its type. The result is this small photo book, the characteristics of which, make it, at once, also a flipbook.

For more information, you may visit their web, where their experimental photo work on paper, found objects and waste can be seen; always searching for the graphism authenticity and avoiding the use of digital modification.
