Doctoral Thesis by Sijie Sun

Sijie Sun, graduate of the Master’s Degree in Research in Art and Design (MURAD) at Eina and PhD candidate in the Doctoral Programme in Philosophy at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, publicly presents her thesis Research on Intergenerational Gamified Digital Reverse Mentorship and Experience Design for Older Adults’ Well-being on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, in classroom A2.3 at the Eina Bosc facilities.

The thesis, supervised by Professor Elena Bartomeu Magaña and tutored by Professor Gerard Vilar Roca, addresses the challenges of ageing from a philosophical, ethical, and experience design perspective, proposing an innovative model of reverse intergenerational digital mentoring through play and technology.

This work explores how older people can become active protagonists in knowledge exchange through gamified digital platforms, where young people act as technology mentors and older people as mentors of life experience and wisdom. This reciprocal relationship is examined through the ethics of mutual care, theories of cognitive ageing, and wellbeing-centered design.

The research combines philosophical theory, participatory design methodologies, and empirical testing to propose a new form of digital citizenship for older people. The project also introduces the concept of “reciprocal digital care” as a foundation for intergenerational social inclusion and active ageing through the design of meaningful experiences.

With this interdisciplinary approach, Sijie Sun’s thesis offers a transformative perspective on the relationship between generations, technology, care, and design, contributing both to philosophical thought and to innovation in public policy, art, and social design.
