The project consists of redesigning the psychiatric unit of Mataró Hospital on the basis of a new concept of hospital ward through a universal, mobile and functional system that brings flexibility to the space. The role of interior design in this project has become a process of research in the field of current psychiatric hospital infrastructures. The main aim of the project has been to define a new multifunctional space that is efficient, dynamic, stimulating and comfortable from the point of view of the main user, the patient.
My interest in this area is the result of personal experience of a visit to the Psychiatric Department of Sant Pau Hospital and Mataró Hospital. After observing the environment, it can be said that hospitals nowadays are scientific places that are rather cold and impersonal and that have become removed from the human component.
