The renovation of the Mercat del Carmel in Barcelona arises from a critical spatial analysis of the building and its surroundings. The building has become obsolete, lacking visual interest and failing to satisfy the needs of contemporary merchants.
This proposal aims to revalue the importance of Barcelona’s markets as foodie centres and points of sale for fresh, high quality produce. Accordingly, I gave a great deal of thought to how design to solve the markets spatial problems.
My main goal was to make the market a successful social space again, which is achieved by designing a series of improvements to the interior, improving circulation and connections, promoting spatial flexibility and creating new openings.
