The Plaça Víctor Català is the historical site of the market in L’Escala. The aim of the project is to reflect users’ main routes through the square, to remodel it and improve conditions for the market ensuring that it is not affected by bad weather. To achieve this, I propose designing the square so as to define the main traffic flow and that this sutures the two resulting areas.
The southern space is dotted with vegetation, which delimits the square and separates it from the adjacent streets. This area could be a meeting point. The other zone homogenises the square and is where the market is located, a compact nucleus with the stall-holders inside and users around it; market activity takes place in the sunnier part of the square beneath two cubes of Iroko wood. The horizontal edges are rigid slats, the vertical adornment comprises wooden slats and rows of xenon lights that leave empty spaces and alternate randomly. The square also contains the well and railings, which highlight the strong diagonal. The pavement is limestone, laid in a northerly direction in reference to the highly characteristic and ever present wind in the region: the tramuntana.
