In traditional Japanese aesthetics, shadow is an essential element in all its aspects. However, for us in the west light is a powerful ally to our culture. When light shines on a tablecloth, it makes a tap glint and creates sparkles in a glass, this is also aesthetics. The same happens with everyday actions, such as going out for a walk or having breakfast on a terrace. Without the sun and the sunlight, our way of life and our understanding of beauty would not make sense, because, despite maintaining invisible links, these are extremely present in us.
In praise of light is an editorial piece in response to the work by Junichiro Tanizaki entitled In praise of shadows. Its aim is to talk about light, from the more everyday and invisible aspects of our culture, in our everyday lives and our customs. It is the culmination of research which explores light and shadow as agents of the aesthetic in a culture and an environment. A series of reflections arising from research from practical aspects, using written texts and photographs.
