Open Classroom

The renovation of a building at the Na Caragol School in Artà (Mallorca) to adapt the specific classroom for children with autism where activities are carried out to foster their integration into school life and society.

The aim is to create suitable spaces for learning and fostering knowledge to enable the children to interact with their environment, while stimulating their undeveloped cognitive skills.

To promote this type of learning, the space has been arranged to convey a predictable and safe environment where the children feel free to move around.

This layout has been achieved by establishing clear visual limits that help them associate each area with an activity. These limits range from interior parameters (opaque/transparent) to split levels (flooring, ceiling) where the limitation of the materials favours clarity of the space.

Finally, to stimulate their curiosity and interest them in interacting with the environment, all the classrooms have been communicated visually to foster the visual spatial relationships between these and give a communal feel to the overall space to help the children understand and anticipate what is happening around them.
