Can anyone create a good design? As Alexanda Midal argues in “Design by Accident”, the history of design has been generated by people who have created out of necessity and intuition without the self-awareness of being designers. In the field of typographic design we speak of “vernacular typography”: mostly signs created out of the need to communicate and without specialized knowledge, which have ended up shaping the graphic landscape of towns and cities.
This project aims to create a display typeface from a typographic logo designed in the seventies by a non-specialist. The value of this logo lies in the geometric nature of its letters that connects with the rational European design of the early nineteenth century. The intention is to create a functional font by applying current knowledge of typographic design and adapting it to today's communication needs. The final objective is to highlight the relevance that vernacular design has had for professional design.
