What services should a graphic designer offer to a (fictitious) sect of an apparently wild and absurd nature?
The Bokononist religion, which appears in Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Cat’s Cradle, is what brings this question to light.
Sectarian groups have always worked in occult fashion. If this is so, how can they communicate precisely what they do not want to communicate to just anyone? The reply could be that they need a secret communication system so that cult members can communicate solely with each other.
The system proposed here is based on folded paper, with which a system of fifteen ways of folding has been developed (that is, fifteen alphabets). The system is complemented by fifteen symbols which are the key to deciphering the correct way to fold the paper. These fifteen alphabets correspond to the fifteen holy books of the cult, so that each book has its own alphabet and symbol system.
