The project consists of renovating a former industrial warehouse in Barcelona’s East Eixample district as a place to run activities for children. These will take place in different workshops aimed at children aged between 6 and 11 and combine education and entertainment.
The centre connects to an interior street-block courtyard which I plan to renovate in keeping with the overall Interior Street-Block Courtyards Plan. In this way, the warehouse acts as an urban belvedere connecting the street and future interior courtyard and becomes an element of social cohesion by fostering the relationship between the children playing in the courtyard, the seniors as they come and go and the activities that take place in the courtyard.
The centre is divided into two areas: on the one hand, the workshops and a space for learning, playing and co-existing which comprises four white boxes with openings at different heights. The idea for the box was inspired by the path taken by the child to develop their creativity. And, on the other, the necessary services areas (toilets, reception, teachers’ room and the storeroom) to ensure that the activities take place as fully as possible. The reading and library space lies above this services area.
