Inaugural Conference: "Who’s safe-guarding Barcelona? Ties and civic struggles in times of revolt" by Itziar González Virós, architect, urbanist and activist.

Itziar González Virós (Barcelona, 1967)
Architect, urbanist and activist, González maintains an extensive experience and is recognized publicly for her co-operation and influence in several urban and architectural studies in regards to sustainability in social participation, mediation and conflict resolution in public space. Having completed her studies at ETSAB (UPC 1995) and influenced by her final project in Christiania, Copenhagen, as an architect she has done over the last several years, numerous rehabilitation work in urban and rural spaces, both in Catalonia as Scandinavia. Similarly, as an independent technical consultant in processes of neighborhood transformations, editor of reports and key contributor in defining comprehensive project impact and socio-economic integration models on the environment, she is currently active in projects such as: neighborhood associations liasons for the design of the Plaça de les Glòries –site of the Barcelona Design Hub, the new Flea Market building known as “Els Encants” and access to the surrounding area of the 22@ District of Barcelona–.

Itziar González Virós

Actively linked to the seeking of solutions and alternative systems of organization, decision-making and participation processes, she was elected councilor of the Ciutat Vella district of Barcelona from June 2007 to May 2010 and is involved since October 2012 in the mobilization of residents of Ciutat Vella, social work with the PAH and is founding member of the Catalan promoter group Citizens Parliament and Director of the Institute for the Mapping of Revolt.

Among the many social transfer interventions –an example being her advisory role in the research of applied axiological epistemology at CeTR (Center of Traditions of Wisdom) - González is also a frequent speaker at cultural locations, universities and the media and is the author of articles, research studies and various content dissemination papers of intellectual, social and cultural reference. Among her recent work highlights the restoration guide to Alexandre Cirici "Barcelona Pam Pam" and the author’s update in “ Per no perdre peu”. (To avoid missing the step) Barcelona 2012.

Alexandre Cirici, of whom this year we commemorate the centenary of his birth, was art critic and founder of EINA, along with Ràfols Casamada in 1967. Itziar’s González’s lecture is thus the starting point of activities planned for this fall under the title: "Remembering Cirici" –more information on EINA’s Cirici commemorative activities, coming up soon–.
