Lettering techniques course

TYPO EINA is a specialised training area in typography. Plus the Masters in Advanced Typography and the design courses of Lettering Design and Layout Design, three new specialised courses will be added Lettering Techniques, Advanced Font Development and Advanced Text Editing.

Next November 11st starts Lettering Techniques, a specialization course that aims at deepen and expand the techniques related with this discipline, such as non-traditional calligraphy (using brush, marker pen and other drawing tools), cut and printing or vector graphics. The course objective is to create original lettering works based on experimentation, rather than drawing letters to create a typeface. It is an invitation to explore the shape of the letter and words as illustrations, moving beyond specific techniques and traditional systems. Students will gain lettering skills using brush, lettering with font outline drawing, cutting and printing techniques on linoleum, soft cut, plastic, cardboard and other materials, as well as vector drawing.

The teachers are Marta Cerdà, Laura Meseguer, Arcangela Regis and Oriol Miró, and the programme is:

• Calligraphy - Oriol Miró
  Study of several classic and modern calligraphic tools. Structure of expressive lettering and practical work.

• Letter and Word Drawing - Laura Meseguer
  Based on a calligraphic sketch of a word or phrase to be used, we will work to find the relationship between meaning and style, exploring the tools available.

• Manual Matrices - Arcangela Regis
  Transfer your lettering to various materials that can be cuted or engraved in order to realize a print from it. Matrices will be done in classic materials (linoleum, soft cut) or recycling and experimenting with unusual materials (plastic, cardboard). Includes laser cutting and 3D printing.

• Digital Lettering Projects - Marta Cerdà
  A two-day workshop covering the various techniques and digital trends in vector and pixel lettering. We will study several examples of transition between analogue tools versus computers, and digital projects. We will work on specific solutions for projects proposed by the students.
