Jorge Domenech Martín, student of the Master in Advanced Typography at EINA, with his typo project called “Urbanita”, has been awarded the Paco Bascuñán typography Award, announced at the 6th International Congress in Typography, celebrated last month of June in Valencia, Spain.
“Urbanita is a mechanical font, geometric and mono lineal, thought mainly to be used in regular texting and for the moment, accompanied only by its bold version, valid both for running text and display usage. The font has been conceived as the exclusive font to a cultural magazine featuring the most relevant technological trends of the city. Urbanita has thus been designed with the intention of transmitting urban-tech values through its morphology and proportions, which intend to reflect the mechanization, automatization and industrialization of modern cities.
The primary reference for the development of this project has been the Gridnik by Wim Crowel for its similarities and because from the start the new typo was set to be able to achieve a stained effect to this font. To this respect, the grey produced by Urbanita is light and homogeneous due to a notorius height of X and due to the wide eyes of its characters, making it an appropriate font easily readable in small body-sizes. Its most distinctive characteristic is the obliquous semi-remakes and the diagonal antlers of certain characters, which bring a certain rhythm to the font that contrasts with the sobriety of the clean straights, showing dynamism, specifically in running text. Furthermore the curves on the vertexes display amiable consideration preventing the reader from getting tired, portraying through this new font, both originality and functionality.
