“VICINITIES of painting” is an exhibition curated by Jeffrey Swartz, art critic and professor at EINA. The exhibition explores the thresholds and extremes of pictorial practice, where the image enters into play with unconventional material supports and the exploration of multi-dimensional space: an exhibition conceived in the vicinity of painting.
Marià Dinarès (Vic, 1959) and David MacWilliam (Halifax, Canada, 1951) offer contrasting visions of the physical presence of painting, the volumetric value of colour and the textures and dimensions of variegated surfaces. The exhibition presents a body of the artists’ recent and current production, inviting us to see the impulses and internal logic driving each artists’ work. The work of Dinarès shown here takes on the shape of three-dimensional models, presented on surfaces which fit into the architecture of the exhibition space. MacWilliam shows a recent series of intensely solid-toned textile compositions, accentuating the folds, weight and density of the material.
After its presentation at the Espai Cultura EINA Barra de Ferro, “VICINITIES of painting” will be seen at the Escola d’Art i Superior de Disseny de Vic, in the city of Vic, Catalonia, opening in April 2018.
On the occasion of the visit of David MacWilliam to Barcelona, EINA has organized an open seminar and debate on pedagogy and research in art and design education, with a focus on Canadian models, to be held at EINA on 6 March at 3.30 pm.
