This is the renovation project of a former haberdasher's in Sant Cugat del Vallès to create a new space associated with sewing.
Sewing used to be a necessity (among the working classes) or entertainment (among the upper classes), but nowadays anything to do with sewing is a hobby.
Urban fabric adapts to this new way of understanding sewing. It does this by incorporating different uses into the building: a sales area, where customers can buy fabrics and specific haberdashery products, a multi-purpose room, where they can read magazines and share their thoughts with other users, and two workshops: one for hand sewing (weaving, creating patterns, etc.) and a machine sewing room. In each case, the aim is for the customer/user to interact with both the product and other users.
Two double spaces have been created to interrelate the two floors, develop an overall idea (visual and acoustic) and carry out the different functions.
The idea has been to maintain the essence of the former haberdasher's at all times and some of its distinguishing features have been retained.
