Work teams are bodies which many people belong to. We constantly work as teams and, rather than seeing teams as a system outside society, they are very often the way we interact with each other. To find out more and reach new conclusions, research was carried out into work teams that are created to complete projects. Working on projects is living your life as though it were a series of episodes. Each project that you are involved in becomes the most important thing for a certain period of time and it then disappears until it is just a memory and is replaced by a new project.
This project was carried out by EINA Design School and FNOB (Barcelona Foundation for Ocean Sailing). These two institutions believe in the future of design and are taking new directions. The ocean-going sailing sector wants to be more open to the world and become better known and more familiar in Catalonia and, at the same time, design is trying to forge a path in different sectors to see how it could bring solutions bursting with creativity to distant lands.
To carry out research into team work, fifteen surveys were conducted on a sample of professionals and current contexts associated with this subject were analysed. The interviewees came from different sectors: ocean-going sailing, elite sport where you work as a team and, lastly, other sectors where team work is the lynchpin of the profession.
The research was formalised in three different ways. Two consisted of teamwork, a decalogue in the form of a postcard containing a model for training a team and a journal in which the points of the decalogue could be read. It was in fact a pocket-size book with short texts about the ten most relevant points to come out of the interviews, backed up by quotes and examples.
Once the research was complete, the role of design focused on improving the current situation. Consequently, by applying the conclusions of the research to the sector on which this project focused, namely ocean-going sailing, the third of the formalisations is Wesail, the design of a mobile app based on the contents of the model created to train teams specifically in this sector.
The most outstanding aspects of this project to create a team hinge on the number of members that it requires, the cohesion between the parts, communication, the relationship with the partners and the duties that need carrying out and the post-project.
