Xerrada d’Ethel Baraona Pohl i Urtzi Grau

Talk by Ethel Baraona Pohl and Urtzi Grau

The editor and curator Ethel Baraona Pohl and the architect Urtzi Grau gave a talk at EINA on essential publications to understand the history of design, architecture and art in the second half of the 20th century. In addition, they also shared which are the current publishers to follow in order to keep up to date with the latest research in design/art/architecture.

This event took place within the framework of the Bachelor of Design, Contemporary Design and Art subject, led by María García Ruiz, on 14 November.

Ethel Baraona Pohl is a critic, writer and curator, as well as co-founder, together with César Reyes, of the independent research and publishing studio dpr-barcelona, which operates in the fields of architecture, political theory and the social milieu. Her curatorial practice includes, among others, "Twelve Cautionary Urban Tales" (Matadero Madrid, 2020-21); and more recently, "Llibres Model" a curated book collection and open library (Model, Barcelona Architectures Festival 2022, 2023). Ethel is Senior Assistant at the Chair of Architecture and Care in the Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich. She strongly believes that publishing is a political act, and reading is a form of resistance.

Urtzi Grau is an architect, lecturer in the School of Architecture at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and founding partner of Urtzi Grau / Fake Industries. In his work he uses replicas - reproductions of pre-existing works, and, in the Romance language sense, responses to previous arguments - to produce architecture. Author of books such as Folk Costumes Indo Pacific Air (APE, 2022), Better Together, Stories of Contemporary Documents (URO, 2022), Learning to Live Together: Humans, Cars, and Kerbs in Solidarity (Bartlebooth, 2021) and Melbourne, Sydney: References, Reflections and Remarks (Post-Post, 2018).
