iF Design Student Award 2023 for Pol Julià

Pol Julià, student of the Bachelor of Design, has been awarded with the iF Design Student Award 2023, one of the most important and prestigious design awards in the world, with Prostheses for home appliances with an identity crisis.

Pol Julià was one of the 76 prize-winners from among the 7,068 candidates who applied for these awards. The jury valued that this proposal encourages people to reflect on excessive consumption and the alternative paradigm of the circular economy by redefining familiar household appliances into something unexpected and eminently useful.

Prostheses for home appliances with an identity crisis questions industrial capitalist consumption policies and the generation of electronic waste. Starting from household appliance waste, as great exponents of contemporary capitalist industrial mass consumption, the project generates "Open-Source" designs to repropose them in a reversible way (being able to return to their original state easily) in tools for domestic manufacture, as opposed to mass consumption.

This project has been carried out within the framework of the Bachelor of Design, in the 4th year subject of Projects 4, led by Oriol Fondevila, and has been exhibited at the Museu del Disseny de Barcelona in the framework of the exhibition 'Imagining the possible', which took place from 21 December to 29 January, with the aim of making visible the potential of art and design as ways of exploring the edges of our world by changing and altering our habits of thought.
