Nuria Coll Garrido - White Box

White Box

The aim was to plan a home in the Barcelona district of Gràcia which would also act as the workshop of a young plastic artist. The concept and the name of the project are inspired by Duchamp’s boxes, which housed small elements of his work inside them. The same as the boxes, the home-workshop is proposed as a space that houses the creative and living world of the artist: a space that appeals to aspects of his personality and his work and which is an accumulation of both objects and experiences.

The interest of the project lies in the fact of seeking the physical representation of the community between life and art as the option of a modern way of life. Small independent spaces are created in the distribution of space that are articulated through the architecture. These spaces represent multi-purpose blocks of activities that generate different forms of relationship between the user and the space.

Fundamentally, two container spaces are laid out in the small shell, separated by courtyards and articulated by means of a passageway that runs lengthwise through the whole of the locale. The function of the courtyards is to provide as much light as possible and create transition spaces. A neutral atmosphere has been created but with some points of colour in the services and in the mesh of the ceiling to generate points of interest and warmth in the ambience.
