The programme chosen proposes the installation of a design centre, linked to the Public Administration, in a Catalan Modernist-design abattoir in the city of Mataró. Its aim would be to bring design closer to the public, raise public awareness of design as a factor for differentiation and offer spaces for the dissemination of work by professionals in the industry and the latest trends in this field.
The aim of the project is to link the three existing buildings, making the whole act as a unit, to make permeable the use of the spaces and facilitate routes, arrange and differentiate accesses and private and public spaces, respect the existing architecture. All this it is hoped will establish a more direct relationship with visitors and users.
The work units have been conceived as an opaque and solid nucleus, wrapped in a permeable skin. This concept runs through the rest of the building. Consequently, the spaces are differentiated by diffuse limits and follow a gentle progression between spaces of different uses and between the exterior and interior.
