Refurbishment and design of a detached building, the former residence of the founder of the Barcelona psychiatric home and currently an outpatients’ clinic, for a foundation aimed at children hospitalised in the Dexeus University Institute. The building is listed due to its historical and environmental value (Level C of the Special Architectural Heritage Protection Plan and Listing of the Les Corts District of Barcelona. Distribution of areas: ground floor + 3. Constructed area: 935,68 m2). The Hospital Foundation is a non profit-making organisation that works to meet the human needs of hospitalised children and of their parents or closest family members.
The study focuses on a barely developed field, which consists of enhancing, through design, the functional and therapeutic nature of the space by humanising the spaces, contact with nature and the sensorial stimulation of the child patient lacking this due to long hospital stays. Consequently, the challenge consists of providing an interior design point of view with the aim of achieving direct benefits on quality of life in the health sector.
On the basis of a detailed programme, the aim is to act both on the interior and on the landscaped surroundings and make the historic value of the building and its new uses compatible while enhancing the natural attractions of the site, at all times considering the therapeutic aims of the complex.
