Núria Carrillo Erra - Donant a llum

Giving Light

This project involves the design of an ephemeral lighting installation meant to illuminate that small, dark part of the city known as the Gothic Quarter. It works as a kind of tour guide with light. The installation takes on the form of a light route where various luminescent points appear, highlighting a number of concealed subjects of interest, thus setting up a game of hide and seek with the viewer.

The project seeks to make a double discovery, starting with a zoom out, like a game of Russian dolls, where the first uncovering is the neighbourhood itself as it finds out that there is a light installation as a draw. The second gaze, more specific in nature, is created with a luminescent sign system that points to various architectural features of the area, their interest determined by a personalized point of view. Where there is light the eye focuses in, and where the eye insists something of interest will appear in behind.

In this way, the neighbourhood reveals itself in a way that is transparent and sincere. Thus the idea is to give light, and, in giving light to the Gothic Quarter, to “make” Barcelona. It is a project, therefore, that guides you as you discover the city.
