Alex Alvarez - Habitar com a utopia

Dwelling as a utopia

Dwelling as a utopia is not a project, it is the recollection of sediments deposited at the bottom of a period of time occupied in debating theoretical and practical questions on the dwelling. Dwelling understood far from the concept of house held by Western society, where the house, an isolated, dead and static object, represents a refuge from the outside world and a gateway for entering virtual realities. Dwelling, then, understood as a primitive construction, as an instrument with the potential to meet basic human needs and to determine life around it. A living object that should be a conduit of relationships, a machine for relating the living existence of the natural environment and the living existence of man.

The aim of this debate on the dwelling, started by reading an excerpt from Essai sur l’architecture by Marc Antoine Laugier (in which he seeks the concept of architecture in primitive huts), is to design proposed dwellings based on retrieving values and forms from the past, organised and adapted to contemporary needs with the aim of upholding a parallel way of life to the current reality.
