The project consists of renovating two buildings joined together in 1976, to form terraced houses, in the centre of Vilafranca del Penedès. They have been divided into two functions: a WARDENED FLAT for four young people aged 16 to 18 from a CRAE (Residential Centre for Educational Action) and two social educators (P1, P2, P3 and Pterrat) and a ROOM-WORKSHOP (a public space to be used as a study room, where workshop and talks will also take place) for the town’s young people (PB and PS).
A great many aims have been suggested: to create a space that has as much of a family feel to it as possible, privacy in the bedrooms, expansive and open spaces (overall perception of the space), to make full use of the natural light, etc, and always remember the type of use required of each zone (private, semi-private or public).
The concept is to merge the functions through the staircase and skylight. The staircase is the point that unites the spaces, a series of steps and counter-steps that bind each floor to the others. The skylight crowning the staircase is the point of union for all the floors of the building by means of the light filtering through it. Each space has been designed for young people, since it aimed at them. This can be seen in both the materials used and the four colours selected by the young people from the CRAE, as well as in the furniture and lighting chosen.
