Students of the Postgraduate in Photography and Editorial Design at EINA, have recently recieved a masterclass on curatorship imparted by Agustín Pérez Rubio in the context of the inauguration of the exhibition Modus Vivendi of conceptual artist Sophie Calle (1953) at La Virreina. Centre de la Imatge, in Barcelona.
"A little before the official opening of the exhibition, the commissioner led a tour of the facilities, explaining both Sophie Calle's work as well as his own curatorial vision, the reason for the selection of the works, or how the layout adapts to the different areas within the palace of the Ramblas in Barcelona. Pérez Rubio insisted that this is no retrospective, although the quantity and quality of the pieces, but rather a continuation of the now famous 1996 exhibition of the Caixa.
Undoubtely it was the piece Cuídate mucho (Take good care) (2007) that mostly captivated students, observing how all those women talk through the mouth of a scorned woman. Narrative, storytelling and concept. The artist herself, walked along with the public through all the exhibit rooms. Maria Turner, Sophie, S. sat quite a while staring at the marble bullfighter in the former dining room of the palace. Strongly fragile, she was able to built our views on her and on ourselves, once again. Many thanks Agustín for your generosity.”
