Gabriela Rubio, Barcelona Crea Grant

Gabriela Rubio, coordinator of the Postgraduate Diploma in Narrative Illustration for Children's and Teenagers' Publications, has won the Barcelona Crea 2023 Grant in the literary creation section. This grant, awarded by the Institut de Cultura de Barcelona, is aimed at developing her project How to be a better illustrator than an Artificial Intelligence.

The research she carries out will permeate the illustration programme with up-to-date, first-hand information on how this field is evolving.

"The idea is to construct a fictional novel, combining its writing with the elaboration and analysis of images generated by Artificial Intelligence that illustrate the text itself as I write it, so that the work, while being created, serves to investigate and reflect on illustrations in general and on what humans are capable of contributing to illustration projects developed with the help of artificial intelligences in particular," says Gabriela.

As a result of the project, the writer and illustrator is conducting research into the new field of image creation, using and experimenting with new technology, attending seminars and lectures, interviewing creators and actively participating in the professional movements that are emerging around the regulation of digitally created images.
