The exhibition Matter Matters. Designing with the world, which opens on Friday 21 February at Disseny Hub Barcelona, shows the piece Wool Shelter IV, created in the context of the Workshop (re)lanolize, a joint initiative of Eina Obra, the Tornen les esquelles collective and SILA Studio; and Seat BCN, the corporate typography designed for the company SEAT by Andreu Balius, typographer and professor of the Bachelor of Design at Eina.
Wool Shelter IV
This is a piece made from local sheep's wool felt from Textil Olius, dyed with Rubia tinctorum, hardened with biopolymers and waterproofed with lanolin. The piece is made up of ‘cuticles’ inspired by the cuticles of wool, which are assembled autonomously, without the need for sewing.
The piece began to be developed in the Workshop (re)lanolize, where, together with participants from the collective Tornen les esquelles (Ana Vivero, Florencia Toro and Solange Dalannais) and SILA Studio (Ana Otero) explored how to (re)introduce lanolin into felted wool and how to evaluate its resistance to water. The aim was to restore the waterproof and protective properties of wool to its untransformed state, applying them to the felting context.
Seat BCN
Seat BCN is a corporate typeface for Seat car brand company. Seat BCN is a multi-script type family that supports different scripts such as Latin, Arabic, Greek, Cyrillic and Hebrew, and includes a large set of styles for each one in order to fit with the company needs. This typeface was awarded a LAUS Gold award from the Spanish Design Association, and a Bronze prize at the European Design Awards. Andreu Balius has also contributed to the Matter Matters exhibition catalogue with an article on the evolution of typography.
Matter Matters. Designing with the world
The exhibition Matter Matters. Designing with the world, curated by Olga Subirós, invites us to rediscover the relationship between matter and the world we live in through the collections of the Design Museum and other contemporary pieces. The exhibition questions, poses challenges and also aims to inspire new practices to understand how to design in symbiosis with the planet.
Book
Presentation of the book Matter Matters. Designing with the world, a publication with more than 50 articles that explores the materiality of objects with a critical perspective. It will be presented at an event with Olga Subirós, curator of the exhibition, Jose Luis de Vicente, director of the Museu del Disseny, and some of the participating authors.
