Drawing Body to Body with Trees. Tactile Drawing, Graphic Memory and Care for the Territory

As part of the SIT-PLU (Situated Creative Practices for the Pluriverse) project, funded by the Creative Europe programme, NEBULA Laboratory researchers Anna Pujadas and Mar Saiz developed the Drawing Body to Body with Trees laboratory in January 2026. Through tactile drawing and the reuse of graphic materials, students from the Bachelor's Degree in Design and primary school children explored contact with trees as an artistic practice of care and a way of making the territory's vulnerability to soil erosion visible.

This laboratory was a collaboration between primary school children from Escola Dolors Monserdà Santapau and university students from Eina's Bachelor's Degree in Design. The activity involved improvised drawing in direct contact with tree trunks, creating a shared creative experience in which the tree itself also played an active role in the process.

To carry out the activity, discarded risograph masters were reused, retaining traces of ink and marks from previous work. The process involved placing two sheets of paper between the participants' bodies and the tree: one blank sheet and another associated with a risograph master containing residual ink. In this way, marks were transferred onto the paper without the ink coming into direct contact with the bark, protecting the tree throughout the experience.

The experience paid particular attention to trees with roots exposed by soil erosion. Contact with these roots allowed participants to physically perceive the irregularities, textures and vulnerability of the trees. Environmental issues such as drought, soil loss and the degradation of the park, which are often presented as abstract data, acquired a tangible dimension through touch. The tree ceased to be merely part of the landscape backdrop and became a vulnerable body with which to establish a relationship of attentiveness and responsibility.
