L'Hivernacle (The Greenhouse)

The Hivernacle is a historical monument in Barcelona's Parc de la Ciutadella.

The main aim of the project is to bring value to the monument by giving the space a use as the underuse of it can be seen in its current state of disrepair.

The purpose of the project is to attain a tourist point of reference so that the user appears as a visitor to the monument and a customer of the restaurant.

The main concept is to fuse the idea of a greenhouse with a restaurant. The project is based on a design that respects the building, making this project possible. Both thermal and sound comfort have been taken very much into account by using the qualities of the greenhouse through controlling the impact of light on the interior. The building comprises three halls, two covered side ones and an open central one. The action focuses on one side hall and leaves the other in its present state as the museum part of the building.

The space is organised in two independent cubes covered in vegetation. One of them houses the kitchen and the office, and the other has the bar and the toilets. The dining room stretches around the whole of the perimeter of the premises, surrounding the two isolated cubes.
