La Paloma, Second-Hand Market

The aim of this project is to activate the culture of second-hand objects in Barcelona by introducing a type of market that I discovered in Finland. This market is located in a very emblematic dance hall which is currently closed, La Paloma. Situated in the heart of Barcelona, it is home to this new store that will foster the social activity of the surrounding area.

This market will contain books, music, DVDs, clothes, accessories and small items of furniture. The idea behind the design is that the market becomes an integral part of the premises so that the dance hall lives on. The main elements that the project has preserved are the sense of luxury and refinement and the geometry and layout of the hall. The design of the space is dictated by how the market operates and is laid out according to product type. The furniture designed is lightweight and dynamic to favour the double height of the hall. The café is where the stage used to be. The whole of the perimeter is differentiated from the dance floor by different flooring and height. Old windows have also been opened up to make full use of the natural light, as the activity will take place during the day. A market where language is the protagonist, the space experienced with objects experienced.
