The aim of this project is to construct a block of residences for athletes at Club Natació Sabadell (Sabadell Swimming Club), while using existing facilities.
The proposal is to construct a building inside a building. The structure of the existing industrial nave is maintained, with the addition of various forms of metallic sheeting. The residences are set along the length of the nave, like enclosures protected by the building’s new skin. The roof features a large skylight for greater use of natural light, an important feature given how the illumination of the current building is poorly designed.
In the interior of the nave there is a space left between the exterior and the interior where a set of 2-level wooden modules constitutes the flats themselves, with a sequence of courtyards and gardened areas which are understood as an extension of the residences, giving way to meeting areas for residents. The flats are designed to be shared and are interconnected by a large corridor serving as a linking nexus, its unique flexibility making it possible to add or take away modules in response to the needs of each case. The construction itself is done from prefab materials and is quick and sustainable, and can be dismantled. Interchange and proximity between users is the main concept of this project.
