AFRICA SPACE has been created with the desire to bring the African continent to Barcelona. It is a centre of interaction among users where they can share ideas with others and gain knowledge. The programme consists of a library, courses and workshops, talks and round tables, exhibitions, a vending area, administration, accesses and toilets.
A very varied public is expected. All the users will share the desire to get to know Africa to travel there, cooperate, become a volunteer, go and live there or simply because they are interested in the history and present situation of the continent.
It will be situated very centrally at Carrer Muntaner, 46-44, between Carrer Diputació and Carrer Consell de Cent. The premises cover an area of 792 m².
The main aims of the project are to create multifunctional spaces that meet all uses, preserve the morphology and routes of the space, take advantage of and redirect the natural light and be clear about the Barcelona public that we are aiming at. With these ideas in mind, a large wooden volume has been created under the skylight, which organises the main hall and leads natural light into each area. As a counterpoint, there is the exhibition space, which works as a transitional area between the outside and the inside.
