Ana Vaz, A Árvore (2022)

ipsa sonant arbusta

In collaboration with Museu de la Música de BarcelonaLoop Festival presents ipsa sonant arbusta, an exhibition by artists Ana Vaz and Guilherme Vaz curated by Rosa Lleó and Manuel Cirauqui from einaidea. With the title ipsa sonant arbusta ("even trees sing"), the exhibition traces the filmic and musical works of two artists who are united, beyond their generational link, by common and primordial visions of cinema and music.

The exhibition presents two films by Ana Vaz, Apiyemiyeki? (2021) and A Árvore (2022), as well as Guilherme Vaz's sound piece Música en Manaus (2004) and a selection of documents (texts, images and archival recordings) that evoke the unique research trajectory of the Brazilian musician, composer and researcher. In addition, the exhibition will offer the opportunity to reflect on the cosmologies that underlie many of the Amazonian instruments present in the collection of the Museu de la Música de Barcelona, as well as the ecopolitical implications and narrative questions of the museum device.

The phrase ipsa sonant arbusta—originally coined by the Latin poet Virgil in his Bucolics—is also found on the cover of O Anjo sobre o Verde ("the angel over the green"), the album published by Guilherme Vaz in 2001. The record is an example of his search for a musicality that embraces the abysmal and primordial character of the world, beyond the apparent difference between harmony and dissonance, composition and ambient noise.
