The website of the Department of Environment and Sustainability of the Government of Catalonia highlights the thesis The Ecologies of Fashion by Clara Mallart, a geographer and designer who has just completed her PhD at Eina, University Centre for Design and Art of Barcelona.
Her work explores upcycling as a tool for transforming the current textile system. The research proposes rethinking fashion from a bioregional perspective, advocating for textile systems that promote circularity, degrowth, and regeneration.
The goal is not only to reuse textile waste but also to generate a positive environmental, social, and cultural impact. In this context, upcycling becomes a driver of change towards a more diverse fashion, rooted in local territories and detached from the dominant logic of the global North.
